When searching for assisted living, what should I look for?

This is the question that quietly sits in the heart of every family walking through the doors of a senior living community. Chances are, if you are in the right place, you will feel it within the first five to ten minutes—it will feel warm, welcoming… almost like home. If, instead, your visit feels centered around money, something is off, and it is okay to trust that feeling.
While you may connect easily with a sales director, it is important to also meet the executive director and the nurse before you leave. Pay attention to how they engage with you—do you feel genuinely heard, or simply processed? As you walk through the community, notice the small but meaningful details: are caregivers wearing name tags, smiling, and acknowledging you as you pass? Do they introduce themselves? Is the environment clean, and do the residents appear cared for and content? Even the simplest things matter—like whether a resident’s hair has been gently brushed after resting.
Care is not always about what is written in a plan; sometimes it is shown in small acts of dignity and kindness. At the end of the day, choosing a community is not just about services—it is about trust, safety, and heart.
